NARROW GAUGE LOCOMOTIVES
During the period of the narrow gauge railroad building in North America, several thousand
locomotives were build. However, builder lists of Narrow Gauge Locomotives operated in the United States, Canada, and
Mexico very frequently record only the purchaser of the locomotive but not the railroad line(s) upon which it operated.
Also, only the intial purchaser was listed with little or no record of later purchasers or railroads upon which operated.
In the process of identifying narrow gauge railroads in North America, I have compiled (primarily
from published sources) an extensive file identifying specific narrow gauge locomotives with the railroad(s) upon which
operated. These lists have been organized by builder and builder number. Where the locomotive has been
operated on more than one line, the railroads are listed in chronological sequence with dates operated and locomotive
number used by the railroad.
I
have identified, so far, sixty-four companies that have build narrow gauge locomotives employed on railroads in the United
States, Canada, and Mexico. My lists include comprehensive records of Climax, Heisler, Lima Shay, and Porter
narrow gauge locomotives as well as a growing record of Baldwin narrow gauge production.
I will be happy to share what information I have collected. Locomotives are identifed by
railroad name as well as builder and railroad number. I have NOT identified "locomotive name" in my records.
